Bob Courtway Middle School held its first Technology Extravaganza on Monday night, inviting parents to learn about the dangers and benefits of technology.
Alyce Hardee, computer technology teacher at the school, said, "We had technology awareness week (for students) in October, and we wanted to do something for the parents. We're trying to give the parents information about computer safety. We wanted to make parents aware of some of the dangers of the Internet as well as the benefits." Booths were also set up to make parents aware of resources in the community, such as computer classes for students and parents, online banking etc., she said.
Computerized keyboarding teacher Anita Cegers-Coleman gave parents and students some tips on Internet safety. She told students who have Facebook accounts they should not be friends on Facebook with anyone they do not know in real life. She explained sexual predators like to "groom" their victims by keeping notes about things they do online. Cegers-Coleman recommended parents become Facebook friends with their children so that they can monitor their child's activity. Also, she said, it is important not to post photos online that picture your home or license plate, and children should not post photos of other children without their parents' permission.
